How is music therapy different from music education? |
|
Music therapists and music educators often work together. The major difference is that in music education students are taught about music: note names, how to play the piano, names of composers, etc., and in music therapy, music is used as a tool to achieve non-musical goals. If during the course of music therapy, a child learns how to play some songs on the piano, that is an added benefit, but the goals with which the music therapist are more concerned are how playing the piano strengthens fine motor skills or lengthens attention span. However, music therapy is not a substitute for music education, and most music educators are not trained in music therapy.
